Two persons have been confirmed dead in Plateau state following an outbreak of cholera in Kanam Local Government Area of the state

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Shurkuk Cletus Bako, disclosed this in an interview with The Arewa PUNCH in Jos on Friday

Bako said that out of the 20 persons infected with the disease, 18 of them had been discharged after they were  treated by a team of health officials deployed to the area.

The Commissioner said, “It was on Monday morning when we got the news of a cholera outbreak in Kanya community of Kanam Local Government Area of the state.

“Immediately we got that information, resources were mobilised to the affected community because the state was already prepared  for any outbreak

“Unfortunately, when we got to the community, two persons had already died.

But I’m happy to let you know that out of the 20 people that were affected, the remaining 18 were immediately treated and have been discharged from the hospitals,” Bako explained.

He added that “The state government is doing everything possible to stop further spread of the disease,” noting further, “For now, we don’t have any cases but we have already mobilised our medical teams there. We have also initiated an awareness campaign to educate the communities on ways to prevent further occurrences. So, our surveillance teams are on the ground,” the Commissioner assured.

He assured the residents that improving the healthcare infrastructure in the state remained a top priority of Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration, even as he insisted, “We have a three prong approach. One is to ensure that  quality health care professionals are deployed ;to ensure that the facilities are upgraded and equipment are available for the personnel to be able to use them and then to ensure that Plateau State’s presence is felt beyond the state so that people can be coming into the state to access medicare

“We also want to ensure that there is multi-sectoral collaboration that will ensure that we have all the principal key stakeholders key into what we are doing. When we have all these things in place, you can be rest assured that Plateau State will be better for it,” Boko pointed out.
