Two Premier League clubs plot January move for Newcastle’s Callum Wilson

Newcastle United could well be tempted to cash in on a bid for Callum Wilson in the January transfer window, with Brentford and Fulham interested.

The 32-year-old is yet to feature this season, struggling with back and hamstring problems that he picked up over the summer.

Last season was injury-hit for Wilson as well, making just 20 Premier League appearances, only nine of which came in the starting XI.

He did score nine top flight goals despite a lack of starts, but it was notably down on his impressive tally of 18 in the previous campaign.

Wilson signed a contract extension in 2023 but that deal ends in the summer, so January will be the last chance Newcastle have to pocket a transfer fee for him.

The Sun report that both Brentford and Fulham are interested in making a move for the England international in the next transfer window, rather than wait to try and snap him up for free in the summer.

The Bees sold Ivan Toney in the last transfer window and have been unfortunate with injuries to Igor Thiago and Yoane Wissa, so would like to add some firepower.

Fulham have Rodrigo Muniz and Raul Jimenez up front, but Wilson could provide a more reliable goal-scorer, as long as he can remain fit.

Speaking last week of Wilson’s injury problems, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said he is hoping to have the striker back available by the second half of next month.

‘With Callum, we’re looking at a situation where we’re hoping to have him back in full training by the next international break, ready for the games following,’ said Howe.

‘Any injury to the hamstring is potentially complex. The back injury is there, but it was connected (to the hamstring issues). There’s been no re-injury, it’s just been a case of readjusting the timescales depending on how he felt. We’ve had to listen to his body when he’s delivered the work, and he’s also been rescanned.

‘It’s maybe not healed as quickly as we’d hoped, so there’s been a slight adjustment, but hopefully we’ll have him back fully fit and firing for the next group of games. That will be really important because we have missed him. We’ve really missed his energy and what he brings to the squad, and we’ve missed the competition that he brings.’
