Raphael Varane faces an uncertain future at Manchester United. The ageing centre-back is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia as a result.

The former France international has been linked with a move to the Middle East in recent months, with several of his former Real Madrid team-mates now playing their football in Saudi Arabia.

One of them is former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, who can be guaranteed to already be in Varane’s ear about moving from Manchester to Saudi Arabia.

According to 90min, Saudi Pro League clubs Al Ittihad and Al Nassr are ‘working on offers’ for Varane.

Speculation grew about Varane’s future when United declined to trigger the one-year extension in his soon to be expire contract. Others believe United’s decision is delayed due to the planned structural and personnel changes being carried out by Ineos following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment.

I always find it sad when top players – even those past it – end up moving their careers to leagues like the Saudi Pro League. Moving to the MLS sounds less depressing.

Should Varane leave at the end of the season, United will be expected to sign a top quality replacement to partner Lisandro Martinez in the heart of defence.
