The past week had already served as a alert. The Netherlands returned strong in this UEFA index ranking and the results of the returns damage confirmed this trend. Feyenoord Tuesday and the PSV Eindhoven Wednesday in the Champions League, then Az Alkmaar and Ajax on Thursday in the Europa League all qualified for the round of 16. Only Twente bit the dust in Bodo/Glimt after prolongation yesterday in C3, and fortunately for our representatives. Almost a point (0.964) separated us throughout the season last week. This gap has been reduced as a sorrow, to 0.107 unit.
On the coefficient relating to the last 5 seasons, the one that distributes the number of European places available in the following year, we still have a small margin on our competitors, 3.372 points. Only, this melting of ice has taken a serious boost with the results of the week, and it could even get worse in the next rounds. If OL and Ajax have avoided a direct confrontation in 8th of C3, the Dutch points are divided by 6, the number of clubs on the starting line at the start of the season, against a division by 7 for us … they still have 4 European representatives, compared to 3 for France. Watch out for the disaster scenario.
The Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium in great shape
In this context, the elimination of Brest, expected, and that Monaco, facing Benfica, still hurts. In this 2024/2025 season, the Portuguese accelerated their lead over us, going from 1.136 to 1,193. They even exceeded Germany, now 5th, while Belgium picked up 6th place, especially due to a strong presence in these dams. Only the Bruges club went to the Champions League, joining its neighbor, the Circle Bruges, in the 8th in Europa League Conference. The others (Union Saint-Gilloise and Anderlecht in C3, the Gantoise in C4) were all released. France could quickly resume 6th symbolic place, it still takes results.
The big disillusionment of the week is above all to be put on the side of Italy. Three clubs were eliminated during the play -offs this week, all in the Champions League (AC Milan, Atalanta and Juventus). This massacre above all compromises the 2nd place of transalpins in the classification of the last 5 seasons, for the benefit of Spain. They have already lost 0.5 unit in 3 days and this could well increase during the next rounds. There are only 4 Italian clubs, including one in C1, which will have to divide future points by 8, against 6 Spanish representatives, who will divide their next harvest by 7. It is most likely the Liga which will recover an 8th representative Next year.
