The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has defended the controversial closure of the Independence Lagos bridge, attributing the decision to a potential safety hazard that could have led to loss of life.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels TV on Friday, Umahi expressed frustration with the State Controller who authorised the closure but acknowledged her record of effective work, particularly on managing the bridge repairs.

Umahi’s comments come in the wake of widespread public outrage after the Independence Bridge in Lagos was unexpectedly shut down for maintenance, causing severe traffic gridlock in the Ikoyi area.

“Was it necessary to close the bridge? The answer is yes, because it was an emergency situation. But the manner it was done without the knowledge of the Minister of Work who should have given approval, come down to Lagos, look at alternative routes; and do a lot of advocacy was not right,” he said.

Umahi added, “I was very angry with the controller. But in fairness, as the controller of Lagos, she has done very well in her previous assignments. Remember, she managed the Third Mainland bridge repairs in the past, and that is no small feat.

“It is possible that when she saw the big crack, she went into shock and made the decision to close the bridge. If she had not, it could have led to a tragic accident or even loss of life. One life cannot be compared with whatever sufferings we have gone through.”

The unannounced closure on Wednesday sparked public outrage and caused heavy traffic gridlock in parts of Ikoyi. Many commuters took to social media to criticise the lack of traffic control and poor communication by the authorities.

He, however, stated that her actions would be reviewed.

He announced that an investigation would be launched, involving the permanent secretary, to determine whether the closure was justified based on the severity of the damage.

He further underscored the need for transparency and accountability, saying that proper procedures must be followed for all infrastructure projects and road closures.

The minister stated, “I have not heard from her yet, but I have asked her to stay away for now. I am in communication with the permanent secretary, who will handle any disciplinary action. But, we need to know the full details of what transpired before making any decisions.

“If she saw a significant crack, and closing the bridge was necessary to prevent further damage, I would understand her decision. We need to be sure.”

The minister promised that the public would be informed about the outcome of the investigation.

On broader infrastructure works in Lagos, the minister disclosed that the federal government had expanded the scope of rehabilitation for the Eko and Independence Bridges, including damage caused by a fire incident on the Eko Bridge.

He revealed that his ministry had inherited responsibility for these aging structures and had increased the scope of repairs to address long-standing issues, including significant damage to the Eko Bridge caused by a fire.

The minister emphasised that the repairs were vital for ensuring the continued safety and functionality of these essential routes.
