As if Manchester United’s weekend couldn’t get any better after a 3-0 win over Southampton on the road, arch-rivals Liverpool went on to sustain their first defeat of Arne Slot’s tenure.

It came courtesy of an unlikely opponent, too, as it was Nottingham Forest who reigned victorious on Merseyside come the full-time whistle, having escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth last campaign with a 17th-placed finish.

Callum Hudson-Odoi reaped the plaudits for being the only goalscorer of the clash, doing so by striking home a sublime curled finish after cutting in and shrugging off pressure from Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konate.

United technically had some part to play in the result, too, given that Carrington graduate Anthony Elanga set up the winner. The former Red dispatched an exquisite pass to take out Liverpool’s backline, which fell perfectly to the feet of Hudson-Odoi and allowed him to carry the ball forward before picking his spot to beat Alisson Becker.

Bruno Fernandes was evidently pleased with what he saw of his former teammate – as well as the result – as he took to Instagram to send a message to Elanga, commenting, “That assist, man” on his most recent post.
