Manchester United are currently in the process of finalising Matthijs de Ligt’s move to Old Trafford, after which he’ll officially become their second centre-half signing of the summer.
It was needed, too, given that last season’s unprecedented injury crisis culminated with Casemiro deputising – and struggling – in central defence.
Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala moved on, while new recruit Leny Yoro sustained a three-month layoff in just his second outing for the club on the pre-season tour. As a result, Erik ten Hag has been left with significantly fewer options ahead of the side’s Premier League opener on Friday.

United had considered move for Eagles ace
Throughout the window, and as far back as 2023, United have been admirers of Crystal Palace stalwart Marc Guehi. Reports even suggested last month that the club were on red alert after being made aware of his reluctance to sign a contract extension.
However, nothing came of the Reds’ interest. They instead pursued other targets and now risk missing out on the England international, who was a standout performer for his nation at Euro 2024, entirely.
That’s because Newcastle United have been hot in pursuit of ‘solid as a rock’ Guehi in recent weeks, having seen two bids rejected by Palace for falling below their valuation. According to Ben Jacobs, they are now preparing an improved third offer in the region of the Eagles’ £65 million price tag.
