Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly leaving the door open on his senior international allegiance until he receives assurances over potential caps, as per the Daily Mail.

The Manchester United starlet is eligible to represent both England and Ghana and up to this stage of his career he has opted for the former, where he’s played at under-17, under-18 and under-19 levels.

His scintillating breakthrough campaign at Old Trafford has led to increasing speculation that he could be granted a maiden call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad in the near future. He’s certainly outperforming his midfield counterparts Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson, but the Three Lions boss is reluctant to ever part with his trusty lieutenants.

Mainoo made wait over England call-up

However, the forthcoming Euro 2024 tournament means that Mainoo is unlikely to feature for England competitively until autumn at the earliest, Mail’s report adds, while the Ghanian FA are actively looking to sway the young prospect away from England’s national team and to switch to the Black Stars, whom he is qualified to represent through his parents. This also comes amid ‘growing interest’ from Southgate.

Mainoo, 18, has seemingly prioritised club action for now after making his 10th consecutive Premier League start away to Aston Villa on Sunday, which Southgate was in the stands to watch.
