Unusual: Barça and “the curse of lunch”

Hansi Flick appears to be the latest FC Barcelona manager to fall victim to the lunchtime curse, something Jürgen Klopp also suffered from.

Following FC Barcelona’s surprise 2-1 defeat to Las Palmas on Saturday, Mundo Deportivo highlighted the Blaugrana’s recent difficulties playing at 2 p.m. in La Liga matches. The Catalan media highlighted that the 1-1 draws against Cadiz, Espanyol and Rayo Vallecano in 2020-21, 2022-23 and 2023-24 also took place at that time.

Barça went from being the undisputed leader of La Liga to being the pursuer. They have lost two of their last three matches and are just one point ahead of Real Madrid, while their bitter rival has a game in hand. The Blaugrana need victories and quickly.

Klopp also suffered

During Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool, his winning percentage was just under 61%, but it fell to less than 50% when his team played matches on Saturdays at 12:30 p.m. In 2018, he called this the “breakfast” niche.

Barcelona will look to return to winning ways when they travel to Mallorca on Tuesday, before visiting Real Betis four days later for two big La Liga matches.
