Former member of the English-Irish pop boy band, One Direction, Liam Payne, has been reported dead.

Payne, 31, passed away outside a hotel in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, according to the local newspaper La Nacion on Wednesday, CNN reports.

He was found dead after falling from the third floor of a hotel on Costa Rica Street in the Palermo neighbourhood, according to a police statement provided to CNN.

“Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo,” the police statement read.

Authorities are currently investigating whether the incident at the Casa Sur hotel was an accident or a possible suicide, according to the Buenos Aires Times.

Payne had been staying in room 10 on the third floor, and his body was discovered in the hotel’s internal courtyard. The fall from the balcony was approximately 13 to 14 metres, the report stated.

He was said to have arrived in Argentina on 30th September 2024 and attended a show by former bandmate Niall Horan at the Movistar Arena on 2nd October.

Local media reported that officers at the Comisaría Vecinal 14 B police station received a call earlier on Wednesday regarding the presence of a man behaving aggressively, possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

When they arrived at the scene, security operatives found Payne’s body, and paramedics later confirmed that the 31-year-old had died.

The Head of the local emergency services, Alberto Crescenti, stated that it was impossible to save the deceased’s life, as he had sustained “very serious injuries, including a fracture at the base of the skull.” Investigators and experts are now looking into the circumstances of the tragedy.

The One Direction band, which included Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan, was first formed in 2010 after the members appeared on the UK version of the reality competition show The X Factor, CNN reports.

In 2015, the band took a hiatus. Payne later released his debut solo album, LP1, in 2019. In March, he released his LP Teardrops.

He also had a son, born in 2017, with former Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole, CNN reported.

In February 2019, Payne was spotted with supermodel Naomi Campbell at a London concert by Nigerian music star David Adeleke, also known as Davido.
