After failing to materialise their interest with a formal approach this winter, Chelsea plan to revive their pursuit of Alejandro Garnacho at the end of the term.

Indeed, the 20-year-old starlet remains a concrete name on Enzo Maresca’s shortlist this year, as per the Daily Mail.

When the window slammed shut at 11pm on Monday night, and Garnacho remained a Manchester United player, staff were said to be ‘relieved’ that his exit never came to fruition. Manchester Evening News revealed the club had privately acknowledged there’d be uproar if the prolific academy graduate was sold to a direct rival, as there was no way to put a positive spin on his departure.

While they narrowly avoided that being the case this time around, United may have to accept defeat in the summer.

Mail’s report claims the Blues have ‘laid the groundwork’ to get a deal over the line for Garnacho after holding talks with the Argentine international, who’s earned eight senior caps for his country, in recent weeks.

Transfers are considerably easier to hash out during the transition from season to season rather than doing so in the middle of a campaign, making it no surprise the London outfit bode their time and put their pursuit on the back-burner.

Now, Garnacho is poised to play an even more prominent role than he’s grown accustomed to under Ruben Amorim due to both Antony and Marcus Rashford leaving on loan to Real Betis and Aston Villa, respectively.

He joins Amad Diallo, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund as the only out-and-out forwards in the squad, though Kobbie Mainoo was utilised in a more attacking position in the last two matches.
