Retired defender Raphael Varane reveals the three players he was most impressed by during his time at Manchester United.
The 31-year-old ended a glorious 10-year collaboration with Real Madrid to join the Red Devils in the summer of 2021, but his time with the Red Devils proved significantly less illustrious.
The 2018 World Cup winner revealed his rapport with Erik ten Hag over the past couple of seasons was far from ideal which also took its toll on his displays and playing time. So after three forgettable seasons at Old Trafford, he decided to embark on a new adventure, signing for Serie A newcomers Como.
But sadly for the Frenchman, he only made one appearance for Cesc Fabregas’ team before suffering a serious knee injury, an incident that convinced him to call it a day and assert a backstage role at the Italian club.
Nevertheless, Varane returned to his time at Old Trafford in an interesting interview with The Athletic. When asked about his best teammates in Carrington, he only had three names in mind: David De Gea, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.
“Even in difficult moments, they are capable of doing extraordinary things. It’s difficult to perform well individually when the team is struggling. You have to be very very strong.”

Speaking of Rashford, the former defender is surprised that the new Aston Villa signing remained in the Premier League after leaving Man Utd.
Staying for so many years with this level of intensity and demand, years when the overall atmosphere is often negative because performances are below expectations, it’s very, very difficult.
“For him to change his environment is positive. He is someone who loves the club and who gives everything for the shirt. But I’m surprised he’s going (to a club) so close to Manchester. I imagined him going further than a few kilometres away.
