Erling Haaland has learned how to reach the levels of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Manchester City striker having a 'long way to go'.

The prolific Norwegian has made a good start on this path, scoring 52 goals in his first season at the Etihad Stadium. Those efforts, which followed an equally productive spell at Borussia Dortmund, helped City achieve a historic treble of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

Haaland has been held back slightly by injury problems this season, but still has 29 to his name. He was doubled for the individual honors of the Ballon d'Or and FIFA Best Player by Messi, but is expected to win such awards in the near future.

Watch out for injuries

Gerard Piqué – who played alongside Messi and Ronaldo at Barcelona and Manchester United respectively – detailed to talkSPORT Haaland's quest to rub shoulders with the best. And it is a path strewn with obstacles: “IHe thinks he has a lot of potential but to get to the level of Messi and Cristiano it's a long way to go. He has to win so many titles, he has to do it for 15, 17, 20 years and it's not easy either. He is very young, very promising and he has a lot of potential but I still think he is far from these two. »

City remain in contention to defend the three trophies they have won in 2023, with Haaland an integral part of Pep Guardiola's plans for the future. Fitness concerns remain, however, and the talented 23-year-old will need to be managed carefully.
