Veteran defender Inigo Martinez has no intention of leaving Barcelona this summer, according to Mundo Deportivo

The defender still has one more year on his contract, with an option for an additional year, and he plans to honour it. Currently, he is not officially registered with the team, and his future depends on Barcelona finalizing his registration.

Despite this, Martinez remains optimistic and is not swayed by offers from Athletic Club.

It must be noted that the recent injury of Ronald Araujo, which will sideline him for four months, has boosted Martinez’s hope for more playing time. While there is still competition from Eric Garcia, the 33-year-old maintains a positive outlook.

Martinez’s future is extremely uncertain

For the past few weeks, Martinez’s future at Barcelona was uncertain because he is still not listed as a first-team player. Interestingly, his contract includes a special clause that allows him to terminate it and receive his full salary for the remaining duration.

However, he has no plans to invoke this clause. His representatives have assured that he will not terminate his contract, at least not at this time.

This is because he is willing to give Barcelona the time they need to sort out their financial issues. His commitment to staying with Barça is evident, as he has already begun training under new coach Hansi Flick.

Martinez wants to have a key role

It is said that Martinez is determined to play a crucial role in Barcelona’s defence next season.

Barcelona also value him highly for the experience and leadership he brings to the team and with the injury to Araujo, he sees an opportunity to become a key player for the club.

In the past few weeks, despite the uncertainty surrounding his position, Martinez has shown his dedication to the club.

His decision not to activate the contract termination clause demonstrates his patience and willingness to stay with Barcelona through their financial restructuring. By starting training sessions with the new coach, he is making it clear that he is ready to contribute to the team’s success.
