Barcelona’s captain last season, Sergi Roberto, officially saw his contract with the club run out at the end of last month.

The La Masia graduate, who has been a reliable member of the Catalan outfit’s core for years now, thus saw his time at the club cut short anticlimactically.

The club were reportedly considering extending his contract for one more season, but financial struggles led to the move being postponed.

Now, a week after pre-season training began in Catalonia, the player appears to have had enough.

Departure all but confirmed

According to an update from TV3, Roberto has decided not to continue with Barcelona for next season and will no longer wait for offers.

The former Barcelona is now open to listening to offers from the Premier League as he plans his future. After all, the Catalans have not provided him with any clarity on his situation.

The Spaniard has received several offers from clubs in Spain including Sevilla, Valencia, and Girona.

However, it appears that he has his heart set on a move to England, and it remains to be seen where he plays next season.

An ideal captain

While Roberto may not have been a regular member of Xavi’s starting lineup last season, he will go down as a special captain in Barcelona’s history.

After all, the player always prioritised the club and was an inspiration to players in the dressing room, showing that one need not be a regular starter to make an impact.

Apart from his professional attitude, Roberto will be remembered as one of the club’s most versatile candidates in recent years. His departure from the club marks the end of an era.
