The Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, has said only a viable public service can help Nigeria overcome the challenges it currently faces.
Speaking at a news conference to mark the commencement of the Lagos Public Service Week in Alausa, Ikeja, on Saturday, Agoro highlighted the significance of a robust public service.
The theme for this year’s Public Service Week is “Fostering Innovation Amid Global Challenges: A Public Sector Perspective.”
Agoro drew attention to the global issues facing many nations, such as climate change, rising living costs, high unemployment rates, brain drain, and worsening poverty levels, which are particularly severe in Africa.
He said, “Let me, however, state here today, that the ability of any nation to survive these global challenges largely depends on the viability of its public service to effectively implement government’s policies and programmes to improve the various sectors of the economy.”
He further emphasised that the Lagos State Public Service is committed to efficiently implementing government policies aimed at improving residents’ quality of life.
“In the Lagos State Public Service, part of our main goals is to find collaborative and effective ways of actualising government policies and programmes to improve the standard of living as well as fulfil the promises of this administration.
“Importantly, we will continue to encourage our workers to be more proactive and innovative by exploring their creative side to proffer smart innovations/solutions to improve our service delivery,” he said.
Agoro also pointed out that effective governance relied on a competent public service to deliver the necessary services to the people.
He commended public servants for their contributions to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda and assured them that the governor would introduce more incentives to reward their achievements.
Agoro expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for providing subsidised 50kg bags of rice to public servants to ease the burden of rising food prices.
He also praised the governor’s leadership and acknowledged the efforts of the organisers of this year’s Public Service Week.
Last week, Agoro urged senior civil servants to mentor younger colleagues in their respective ministries, to foster positive thinking and ensure effective service delivery.
He said this at the 27th Retirement Benefits Documentation Seminar, held in Alausa, Ikeja, for public servants set to retire between January 1 and June 30, 2025.
Agoro said, “The fact remains that our journey as public servants will surely end one day, but the legacies left behind will speak volumes even after retirement.
“Therefore, as your service to the Lagos State Public Service winds down, I want to admonish you to spend the little time left mentoring the downline officers in your various MDAs, in a way that will engender positive thinking, a growth mindset, and effective service delivery at all times.”
