According to Archivo VAR, the ball fully crossed the goal line during Barcelona’s 2-3 defeat against Real Madrid, but the lack of appropriate technology or officials to confirm it meant the goal was not counted.

Basically, a perfectly legal goal was not awarded to Barcelona last night due to limited resources.

Sunday’s El Clasico stirred up a significant debate when Barcelona were denied what appeared to be a goal after the ball seemed to cross the line.

The match at the Santiago Bernabeu saw Barcelona take an early lead through Andreas Christensen, but Real Madrid quickly responded with a penalty from Vinicius Jr.

Barcelona were denied a clear goal

Barcelona believed they had retaken the lead in the 28th minute when Lamine Yamal’s clever flick from a corner caught Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin off guard.

Lunin managed to deflect the ball away before Federico Valverde intervened, but replays suggested the ball had crossed the line.

Despite objections from the Barcelona players, a lengthy VAR review determined that there was not enough conclusive evidence to show the ball had crossed the line.

This decision was controversial because, unlike many major leagues, La Liga lacks goal-line technology, leaving the outcome open to interpretation.

Xavi enraged about the event

Speaking about the event, even Xavi seemed infuriated, saying that it was unfair to his team, especially since it happened in a game like this.

“This was unfair. It is very clear. Everyone saw it. I repeat, it was a huge injustice today,” he added later in the press conference,” said the manager during the post-match press conference.

“My feeling today is one of maximum injustice, everyone has seen it. This is evidence. We were better than Real Madrid. We deserved the three points,” he added.

It must be remembered that La Liga is the only major European league that does not use goal-line technology.

After Barcelona fans complained about this, La Liga president Javier Tebas defended the decision on social media. He shared reports detailing past mistakes made by the technology in other leagues and wrote, “No comment.”
