Vikings Quarterback J.J. McCarthy to Undergo Surgery, Could Miss Months Depending on Severity

Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy has an injury that is requiring surgery before he’s ever played a down in a regular season game.

The 21-year-old rookie has a torn meniscus in his knee that is requiring surgery. Depending on what they find during the surgery, he could be out of the game for a few weeks, or if it’s more severe, “many months.”

This means that quarterback Sam Darnold will be the starting quarterback going forward. J.J. had played in the Vikings’ first pre-season game behind Darnold, but many hoped he’d get some play time in as the future starter for the team.
