EXCLUSIVE: Rising Australian star Sam Corlett, of Netflix’s Territory and Vikings: Valhalla, is the newest addition to the cast of Headhunters, the surf thriller co-written by and starring Kevin Costner, which also has actors Evan Mock, Chloe East and Daniel Zovatto in the mix.
Marking the feature directorial debut of veteran cinematographer Steven Holleran, Headhunters follows Lazer (Costner), a washed-up American ex-pat, convicted for smuggling ancient relics, who’s serving time in Bali’s infamous Kerobokan prison. After a daring escape, he recruits a group of thrill-seeking surfers led by Bima (Zovatto), a local photographer, and embarks on a journey to an uncharted island, believed to host the perfect wave. What they don’t know is that the island is home to an ancient tribe of headhunters who will guard their island and its treasure at all costs. What ensues is an adventure turned survival story of epic and bloody proportions on a tropical island which once seemed to be paradise…but is actually closer to hell. After all, some paradises should be left untouched.
Corlett plays Mick, a hard-charging Australian surfer with a friendly, approachable nature, who has a fearless edge, especially when it comes to tackling heavy waves. While he may seem rough around the edges, he’s grounded, quick to crack a joke, and easygoing — a friend anyone would want at their side.
Costner and Holleran wrote the script. Costner and Howard Kaplan are producing for Territory Pictures, along with Stone Village Films’ Scott Steindorff, Dylan Russell, Lindsay Davis, and Stacey Woods.
Best known for his lead role in Netflix’s acclaimed historical drama Vikings: Valhalla, which unveiled its third and final season in July, hitting the Top 10 in over 80 countries, Corlett has recently gotten back into business with the streamer as one of the stars of Territory, a neo-Western drama discussed as Australia’s answer to Yellowstone, which quickly rose to the top of Netflix’s global charts upon its October debut.
Also recently earning rave reviews for his turn as a struggling addict in the Australian indie He Ain’t Heavy, Corlett previously starred alongside Kiernan Shipka and Ross Lynch in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, prior to that making his feature film debut opposite Eric Bana in the AACTA Award-wining Australian indie The Dry. He is represented by Gersh, United Management, and Entertainment 360.
