Vince McMahon tried to buy the rights to Netflix’s “Mr McMahon” documentary, after stepping down as WWE CEO.

The former WWE Chairman is gearing up for the release of a new Netflix documentary about his life on Wednesday. While originally expected to be a more positive spin on his life, recent allegations towards McMahon have swayed the tone of the production.

According to Puck’s Matt Belloni, the upcoming documentary was almost finished in 2022. This was when Vince McMahon first stepped down as WWE’s CEO. This was before the damning allegations had come to light.

Belloni reported that after the WWE’s merger with TKO, McMahon tried to buy the rights to the documentary. He got “cold feet” after seeing some early footage, and tried to stop the program from being shown at all.

He was quickly rebuffed by Netflix. They went on to add the controversy surrounding the allegations of sexual assault and hush-money payments into the documentary.

How will Vince McMahon’s resignation factor in?

They then reported that, just two days after the WWE secured their $5 billion deal with Netflix to show Monday Night Raw on the platform, Janel Grant launched her lawsuit about the former WWE Chairman’s alleged behavior.

Once the lawsuit had been filed, director Chris Smith moved the planned March release for the “Mr. McMahon” documentary. Belloni reported that McMahon’s resignation, which was heavily related to the lawsuit and allegations, “features prominently in the version” set to be released on Wednesday.

Vince McMahon has already released a statement about the documentary prior to its release. He claimed that a lot has been “misrepresented or left out entirely in an effort to leave viewers intentionally confused.”

The content of the program looks to have changed dramatically since McMahon’s involvement in the project in 2022.

“Mr. McMahon” will premiere on Netflix on September 25.

McMahon made a rare public comment on September 23, as he issued a statement ahead of the premiere, claiming the project misrepresents facts about him.
