Born in São Gonçalo, in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Vinicius had to wait until he was 24 to discover that he had Cameroonian origins.
On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, Brazil was held in check by Uruguay (1-1), during the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, in the AmSud zone. Just before this meeting, Vinicius received a certificate of ancestry proving that his ancestors came from a Cameroonian tribe.
To establish this, the Brazilian football confederation (CBF) worked with a genetic tracing company. The Real Madrid star striker, said to be descended from the Tikar people, held the document in the company of his father and CBF president Endaldo Rodrigues.
Vinicius-Mbappé, an attack from the Indomitable Lions
“Vini Jr. carries within him the desire to honor his rootsreacted the founding president of African Ancestry, Gina Paige. However, its ancestral history has been erased by racism and the legacy of slavery. Through a DNA test, we discovered that they come from the Tikar tribe in Cameroon. We are honored to reveal his and his family’s African roots, celebrating their tenacity and greatness despite adversity. »
The two stars of the Merengue attack therefore have common origins since Kylian Mbappé also has Cameroonian ancestry. Indeed, his father, Wilfrid is originally from Djébalé, an island in the Wouri estuary near Douala, Cameroon. A third player on this team, Aurélien Tchouaméni, also hails from the West-Central African state.
