The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has condemned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its opposition to the appointment of Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), after their political witch-hunting in the past attempt failed to materialise.
In a statement signed by the party's Volta Regional Communications Officer, Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, the NDC accused the NPP of conducting a baseless seven-year-long campaign to tarnish Dr Asiama’s reputation.
According to the statement, the NPP government deliberately subjected him to legal battles, curtailing his freedom and imposing a heavy financial burden on him, yet failed to prove any wrongdoing.
Dr Asiama, a former Deputy Governor of the BoG, was accused by the Akufo-Addo administration of financial mismanagement due to his role in providing liquidity support to banks under the NDC government.
However, the NDC insists that his actions were not unprecedented, as past BoG governors had made similar interventions.
"The charges against Dr Asiama were nothing but a calculated attempt to silence him," the statement emphasised. "His innocence has now been vindicated, proving that he was targeted for political reasons simply because he defended legitimate financial decisions made under the NDC."
The NDC Volta Region further accused the NPP of consistently targeting Voltarians in political and economic affairs, warning that such tactics would no longer be tolerated.
"It is high time the NPP clearly understood that their days of using Voltarians as scapegoats for their Machiavellian political tactics are over. The Volta Region is fully awake and will not tolerate any further injustice against its sons and daughters," the statement read.
The party also took a swipe at Dr. Gideon Boako, a key member of the NPP, alleging that his wife’s employment at the BoG had caused him to remain silent on the issue due to fear of victimisation. "Unlike the NPP, the NDC operates with moral values and principles, not unnecessary political persecution," the statement asserted.
The NDC urged Dr. Asiamah to remain focused on his mandate to restore financial stability and not be distracted by criticisms from the NPP minority in Parliament. The party assured him of the full support of the Volta Region and all "well-meaning Ghanaians," expressing confidence in his ability to deliver results.
"We urge the newly appointed, turbocharged Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiamah, to remain focused and not be distracted by the empty noise of the opposition’s micro-minority—who, under their watch, plunged Ghana's economy into hardship and instability," the statement declared.
As Dr. Asiamah assumes office, all eyes will be on his leadership at the Bank of Ghana, especially in addressing the country’s economic challenges and restoring confidence in the financial sector.
