In just the fourth match of his Manchester United career, Patrick Dorgu has received a straight red card.
The winter signing lunged into a challenge on Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson, with United leading 2-1 at the time of his dismissal. Despite the foul being initially overlooked by referee Darren England, he was instructed by the VAR officials to take another look on the pitchside monitor and, after a few moments of deliberation, proceeded to give Dorgu his marching orders.
Alejandro Garnacho was subsequently sacrificed in place of Noussair Mazraoui, though the defensive change didn’t prevent the Red Devils from conceding the next goal. Jayden Philogene added to his early opener with a strike from distance in the fourth minute of injury time, dealing Ruben Amorim and his men a detrimental blow in the process.
How Sky Sports pundits reacted to Dorgu’s clumsy red
When reacting to Dorgu’s mishap on Sky Sports, Mike Dean said to the panel: “It’s terrible! He’s caught him around the shin, full studs on [his leg] – it HAS to be a red. Has to be a red card.”
Tom Cairney chimed in: “From the bird’s eye view I had initially, it just looked like it was a hard challenge – he just played the ball and the man, and it went out for a throw-in. But I think he’s caught him quite high and with a straight leg. It looks naughty. I think he’s going to go.
“It’s been an awful night for the boy (Dorgu); he’s played Philogene in one-on-one [and now this].”
