Wayne Rooney has been lined up for a new job two months after leaving Plymouth - and it's not in management.

The former England captain was sacked by Argyle in December after just seven months in charge.

He left the Championship club with the Pilgrims bottom of the table after a run of one win in 14 league matches.

Rooney has since returned to punditry in his absence from the dugout, appearing on Amazon Prime Video's Champions League coverage.

It came after previous appearances on Sky Sports and BBC Sport since the end of his playing career.

Although Amazon are set to lose their Premier League TV deal next season, they will continue to show Champions League action until 2027.

The Sun reports that the broadcaster is keen to keep hold of Rooney as part of their punditry line-up for coverage of the competition.

He made his debut on the streaming platform during last week's knockout play-off round first leg between Manchester City and Real Madrid.

However, Rooney could still make a return to management in the future following his Home Park exit.

The 39-year-old has had previous spells in charge of Derby, MLS side DC United and Birmingham already in his coaching career.

Discussing his next steps as a manager, Rooney told The Overlap: "I would like to go back in [to management]. But it would have to be the right club.

"I'm not in a massive rush to go back in. There's different things that I'm looking at to try and get involved with… unless something was absolutely the right thing to do.

"Every club I've been at, I've put myself in a really challenging situation.

"I've had some great experiences, good ones, bad ones (and) you've always got that to fall back on."

Meanwhile, Rooney has already landed a new coaching role since leaving Plymouth.

The former striker is currently on a short residency at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, where he is providing 'world class coaching' for guests.

His return to senior management could also be on the horizon after Rooney emerged as an outsider for the vacant Cambridge job.
