Radu Dragusin has turned down a move to Bayern Munich in order to join Tottenham – a decision that shocked even his own agent.

The 21-year-old defender is set to become Tottenham’s second signing of the January transfer window following the arrival of Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig.

Spurs agreed a deal worth £25million including add-ons with Genoa for the Romania international on Tuesday. Bayern attempted to hijack the deal last night, making an improved offer worth £26.7m which was also accepted.

The decision was left to Dragusin, who has opted for north London over the German champions.

The centre-half will now fly to London where he is set to undergo a medical on Wednesday.

‘We can’t believe we turned down Bayern Munich,’ Dragusin’s agent Florin Manea told Gazeta Sporturilor, reported by Romanian journalist Emanuel Roşu. ‘Radu had given his word to Spurs and chose to respect this. We’re all still mind blown a bit.’

Manea also revealed Bayern offered Dragusin more money to try and tempt him to the Allianz Arena.

‘He didn’t choose the money. There were more at Bayern. He said this is the right step for his career. It is to be appreciated that he chose his career over money.

‘I don’t know how many would have refused the offer I had from Bayern.’

Signing a centre-half has been a priority at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this month.

Ange Postecoglou has been without his first-choice centre-halves Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for the last two months with the latter sidelined with a hamstring injury, returning to the squad on Friday for the FA Cup clash with Burnley.

Romero has also missed Tottenham’s last four games with a hamstring injury, also serving a three-match ban in November and December.

In their absences, Ange Postecoglou has turned to full-backs Emerson Royal and Ben Davies to full in at the heart of defence.

Dragusin and fellow new arrival Werner are both expected to be available for Tottenham’s trip to Manchester United on Sunday.
