The National Assembly has refuted claims made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that federal lawmakers receive monetary patronage from the presidency.

Obasanjo alleged that members of the National Assembly set their own salaries and received special financial packages from the Presidency when he hosted a group of House of Representatives members at the weekend in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In response, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), and the Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Phillip Agbese issued separate statements on Sunday, labelling Obasanjo’s assertions as false. Adaramodu emphasised that the 10th Senate is a responsible and responsive chamber committed to the country’s economic growth.

“To set the record straight, the Senate only receives salaries as allocated by the Revenue Mobilisation Fiscal Allocation Commission. The National Assembly does not and cannot fix its own salaries,” the statement read. He further dismissed the claims as “uncharitable and satanic,” clarifying that no senator has received any financial patronage from the presidency.

Adaramodu also explained that the so-called constituency projects are merely proposed by legislators, while the executive branch handles contract awards and implementation.
