What future for Thiago Silva?

For four years, Thiago Silva lived his blue dream at Chelsea. Arriving in the English capital after conquering Paris, the Brazilian experienced the roller coaster with the residents of Stamford Bridge. But at almost 40 years old, the defender has reached the end of his adventure in the English city. Unsurprisingly, the London team and the former PSG player announced yesterday morning the end of their union at the end of the 2023-24 season. Chelsea published a press release where the main person concerned sent a moving message to the club and its supporters. Above all, he made it clear that it was not farewell but a goodbye.

“That doesn’t mean it’s a definitive end. I hope to leave the door open to be able to return in the near future, but in another role here (…) Farewells are for those who leave and do not return. I plan to come back one day…” But in what role? A few months ago, the Telegraph revealed that the Auriverde international has already started his reconversion and started training to become a coach. The English media also explained that he already fulfills this mission to some extent with his teammates, with whom he is very demanding in training and in matches.

A future as a coach

THE Telegraph added that he also told his managers how the team should be put together and play. For example, he wanted the team to play low on defense. This was not the opinion of his managers, who did not always perceive his remarks well. In the event of a return to Chelsea, we can therefore think that it will be to start a coaching career with a youth team a priori. As for the immediate future, Thiago Silva will have to ask himself the right questions. Obviously, there is no question of him hanging up his crampons.

Last January, his entourage was very clear to our colleagues at The Team. “Thiago always took care of himself, he always trained very professionally and he is reaping the benefits of that today. He plans to continue playing at the highest level. Thiago thinks he can do two more years like that.” He therefore plans to play at least until 2026, i.e. until he is 42. Where can he bounce back? As a free agent, the experienced Thiago Silva should not lack requests.

Play two more years at the high level

A club has already positioned itself. For several months, Fluminense has been making calls to bring him back. But this is not really the priority of the footballer, who will be 40 years old on September 22. Indeed, his idea is to continue playing in Europe, preferably in a big club. Even if the player still has something under the hood and he could still be of service, particularly to French clubs, it is difficult for the moment to imagine a very large team betting on him as a starter. On the other hand, this could potentially be the case as a third defender or as a player in the rotation, if he accepts this role.

He could also sign for a club of a slightly lower caliber and continue to contribute as a starter. But in addition to his desire to play at a very high level, it must be added that Thiago Silva would like to stay in Europe so that his sons continue to develop within the Chelsea training center. Joining another London club, to stay close to them, could be an option. Just like discovering a new European championship or a slightly more exotic league, like the Saudi Pro League, which likes to prioritize recruiting players who have played in the Premier League. There is no doubt that Thiago Silva will be spoiled for choice, he who already seems to know what he wants to do.
