We now know the tragic cause of missing woman Hannah Kobayashi’s father’s death.

On Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Department revealed that after traveling to Los Angeles to personally search for his missing daughter, Ryan Kobayashi was found dead in a parking lot near the airport. It wasn’t immediately made clear what led to his death, but it certainly aroused mystery in the already perplexing case of his missing daughter. But we now know what happened, and it’s pretty rough.

The LAPD confirmed on Monday that Ryan died by suicide after jumping from a parking structure near the Los Angeles International Airport some time around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday.

How completely devastating.. That poor man. And his poor family, now having to grapple with his loss on top of Hannah’s missing status.

The Kobayashi family has since released a statement addressing Ryan’s death through nonprofit group The RAD Movement on Facebook, which has been helping in the search for Hannah:

“The Kobayashi family endured a devastating tragedy today. After tirelessly searching throughout Los Angeles for 13 days, Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life. This loss has compounded the family’s suffering immeasurably. What the family needs most in this difficult time is for all communities to rally around them with support, compassion, and prayers. Please be considerate with your comments and posts. The trauma they are enduring is profound, and they now face the additional burden of grieving the loss of their family’s pillar and navigating next steps.”

Our hearts are with them during this completely devastating time. Rest in peace.
