Tottenham have signed Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig until the end of the season.

The German international will hope his second spell in England is more successful than his first.

The 27-year-old initially joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020 from Leipzig after smashing in goals for fun in the Bundesliga.

But after just two years, he was leaving west London, having endured a tough time to establish himself as the club's first-choice striker.

So Tottenham fans will hope that things work out very differently for Werner in north London.

What was Timo Werner's record at Chelsea?

Werner arrived at Chelsea off the back of the 2019/20 season, in which he scored 34 goals in all competitions, including 28 in the Bundesliga.

Werner had pace and appeared to be a lethal finisher, so when the Blues splashed out £45million and bought then-21-year-old Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen to play behind him, things looked good.

But after three Premier League goals in his first nine games, Werner's career at Stamford Bridge failed to take off.

He often found himself out wide on the left rather than down the centre and struggled for regular goals.

In 56 Premier League games, he only scored ten goals but did provide 13 assists as well.

2021 marked Chelsea winning the Champions League with Thomas Tuchel replacing Frank Lampard midway through the season.

Werner didn't do that much in the Blues' run to becoming champions of Europe, but he did score a crucial goal in their 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

His final season at Stamford Bridge saw him score 11 goals across all competitions, but it was dominated by big misses throughout.

In the end, Werner finished his Chelsea career with 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 appearances, which shows that he contributed more than just goals but certainly wasn't a prolific goalscorer.

Why did Werner leave Chelsea?

After two successful years for Chelsea but mixed ones for Werner, the striker returned to Leipzig for around £27m -almost half the initial fee Chelsea paid.

Speaking about why he left last year, the striker revealed he was no longer in Tuchel's plans.

He said: "I wasn't part of the coach's plan anymore.

"You have to accept that and find a way to deal with it."

Ultimately, it was a move that promised so much, but unfortunately, Werner didn't quite live up to the potential he showed at Leipzig.

Werner to Tottenham: What has been said?

talkSPORT's Jamie O'Hara believes that Werner will prove to be a success at Tottenham.

He said: "He was at Chelsea when Chelsea were successful.

"Let's not get away from that fact. The standards were massively high when Werner was at Chelsea.

"People got frustrated with him because they were comparing him to [Didier] Drogba. But they would have him now! Werner would walk into that [Chelsea] team.

"I rate him. We know he misses chances. Jason Cundy has seen him more than most - and he said Werner will frustrate.

"That's probably right. He will frustrate us. But if you look at the strengthening of the squad that Tottenham needed to do, it's a really good signing.

"He's worth taking a punt on. He's quick, he's played at the highest level, and I think he'll score goals for us. Ange will get the best out of him.

"I'm really happy about it."
