Things are still tense AF between Catelynn Lowell and her biological daughter Carly‘s adoptive parents.

In September, the Teen Mom star claimed Carly’s parents Brandon and Teresa Davis blocked her from seeing or speaking to her despite previously having an open adoption. While speaking with E! News on Monday, the reality star sadly said things have not improved:

“They definitely have 100 percent closed the adoption. I’m still blocked and they recently told me to quit sending gifts because it was inappropriate and uncalled for, just a whole bunch of things.”

She added:

“It’s still not in a very good place.”

Despite the silence, Catelynn and her husband Tyler Baltierra are not giving up. She said:

“We’ve asked her parents and continue to do so, ‘Is it Carly not wanting contact?’ Because if it’s Carly not wanting contact, it would hurt, but we would understand and say, ‘Hey, if you ever want to have it, we’re here and we totally understand that all of this could be hard for you.'”

Things would be different, however, if the 15-year-old’s adoptive parents are the ones keeping them away:

“If it’s just her parents acting out of fear, it’s my duty as a birth mom to show this child that I’m continuously fighting for communication, because that’s what’s ultimately the best for her, if that’s what she wants.”

Such a complicated situation…

Sharing this challenging side of adoption is now very important to the longtime lovebirds, who are also parents to daughters Nova, 10, Vaeda, 5, and Rya, 3. Discussing the upcoming new season of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, the MTV personality expressed:

“I think that culturally, adoption is only talked about in a positive light. And so when we started talking about the hardships that we have and the emotions that we go through that are hard, people came at us and they were like, well, ‘What do you mean? You should be grateful.’ And it’s like, well, adoption isn’t just all cupcakes and rainbows. There’s trauma, there is hurt, there’s sadness, there’s what ifs, there’s so many hard sides of it too.”

She continued:

“I think it’s important for people to just realize that there is some good things, but there’s also a lot of hard things. We’re just in a season of life where a lot of the hard things are coming up for us, especially as Carly gets older, and it’s okay to feel the hard stuff and process through it, and it needs to be talked about.”

This side of things is something she was more aware of when she was just a teenager signing adoption papers for Carly, the 32-year-old shared:

“I’ve been down some major black holes the past few months. And I did realize that there was so much about adoptees, the statistics of adoptees, statistics of birth parents, and things that I was not educated about or even told about. And I think that’s what upset me the most was, nobody fully educated me on the whole scope of the decision that I was making.”

Oof. The 16 & Pregnant alum went on:

“I feel like now it’s a duty of mine to speak about the real stuff that adoptees go through, because they’re the ones who are the most important and the most affected, and people need to know, if you’re making a decision for your child, these are things that they can struggle with. And I wasn’t told any of that, so I feel blindsided by a lot of it as I’m getting older. It’s just really hard.”

She also noted that they’ve “been very open and honest with our children that we’re parenting about Carly and the decisions” they’ve made, and that has helped normalize the situation, though times of estrangement like this still “affects them too.”

As for her relationship with Carly moving forward, Catelynn is game to do “whatever she wants,” elaborating:

“Whether she just wants a relationship with her biological siblings, if she wants to have a relationship with us, awesome. If she doesn’t, totally understand. Whatever that looks like for her. Because it needs to be adoptee-centered.”

We know it must be so hard not being in touch with Carly, but it’s amazing that she is prioritizing what the teen wants above all else. That is not easy to do! We hope they can get some clarity on this sudden ghosting soon.
