Barcelona fans are keenly waiting for the club to announce the signing of Dani Olmo, who has reportedly joined the club on a six-year deal from RB Leipzig and has recently passed the medical.

Barça are ready to fork out €55 million in fixed fees for the Spanish international, with an additional €7 million to be paid in add-ons.

Many expect Olmo to occupy the left flank at Barcelona, thus forming an attacking trifecta involving him, Robert Lewandowski and Ansu Fati.

Dani Olmo’s role at Barcelona next season

However, a recent report from Adrian Sanchez suggests Barcelona have not signed Olmo to serve as a left-winger in the team.

It appears the Spaniard will be utilised as a playmaker, operating in the central space between the attack and midfield, donning the role of a chance creator.

It must be noted that Barcelona have been eyeing an additional interior midfielder for a while now and were notably linked with a move for Bernardo Silva.

Dani Olmo, to that end, can be identified as a potential alternative for the Portuguese international, with Hansi Flick seeing him as a perfect mediator between the midfield and attack.

The Spaniard has similar qualities, particularly when it comes to finding passes in behind the opposition’s defences. Having him work in tandem with Pedri, therefore, could work wonders for Barcelona’s creative department.

Why Olmo could be a waste out wide

In contrast, utilising Olmo in a wide role could be a waste of the Spaniard’s talents, which mainly lies in dictating the offensive play in the final third.

Not to mention, Barcelona have a series of talented wingers in the team, including Raphinha and Ferran Torres, while they are still not giving up on the pursuit of Nico Williams.

Deploying Olmo as a number ten, therefore, does make a lot of sense, perhaps even more so with Pedri and Gavi nursing from injuries right now.

However, it does raise question marks about how Flick will use his resources considering Fermin Lopez and Pablo Torre are also best utilised in the same position.
