Amazon MGM Studios is not proceeding with the Untitled J. Edgar project, one of the Bosch spinoffs that had been in development at the studio. Meanwhile, Amazon Freevee is not moving forward with the Who’s the Boss? sequel starring Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano, which had been in the works at the streamer.

The Untitled J. Edgar project was on of two Bosch spinoffs announced in February 2023 as being in development at Amazon MGM Studios. The other, which centers on Detective Renée Ballard, was picked up to series earlier this year with Maggie Q starring.

Larry Andries (Blue Bloods) was writing the script for the J. Edgar spinoff, which he executive produced with Michael Connelly, author of the Harry Bosch book series. Andries earlier this year was charged with six felony counts of sexual assault in Los Angeles.

The J. Edgar offshoot was to follow Harry Bosch’s (Titus Welliver) former partner, Detective Jerry Edgar, who is tapped for an undercover FBI mission in Little Haiti, Miami. In this glamorous city, he is forced to balance his new life with the gritty underbelly of the city, while being chased by his mysterious past.

Jamie Hector, who starred as Edgar opposite Welliver on Bosch, was poised to reprise his role in the potential spinoff. The producing team on behalf of Fabel Entertainment included executive producers Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate, and co-executive producer Jasmine Russ.

Amazon’s Bosch universe, which kicked off in 2014 with the long-running mothership series, currently consists of Bosch: Legacy, starring Welliver, and the untitled Renée Ballard drama. Bosch: Legacy is set to end with its upcoming third season, which will introduce Q’s Ballard.

.Executive produced by the late Norman Lear, the Who’s The Boss? follow-up, written/executive produced by One Day at a Time co-creator/exec producer/co-showrunner Mike Royce and co-executive producer Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz, was set up at Freevee in 2022.

It comes from Sony Pictures Television, which owns the rights to the original series and had been working on the sequel since 2020. While it’s not been currently shopped to other platforms, the project remains alive at the studio, sources said.

Set 30 years after the events of the original series, the sequel focuses on former Major League Baseball player/retired housekeeper Tony Micelli (Danza) and his relationship with his daughter Samantha (Milano). She is now a single mother, living in the family house.

Lear and his former producing partner Brent Miller at Act III Productions as well Dan Farah of Farah Films have executive produced the sequel alongside Danza, Milano, Royce and Muñoz-Liebowitz.
