Nigerian singer, Akinmayokun Awodumila, better known as May D, has recounted how his colleague and popular Afrobeat star, Davido was unable to sleep in his room because of the poor state of things there.
TheNewsGuru reports that the singer while featuring in a recent episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast reflected on his experience with Square Records that used to be owned by Peter and Paul Okoye of the P-Square.
May D joined Square Records in 2011 but his time with the label was short-lived as he was dropped in August 2012, a decision that he believes derailed his music career.
Recalling his encounter with Davido, who had asked to stay with him while he was running away from his dad and couldn’t stay in any hotels, the singer said, when Davido saw his living conditions, he was shocked and declined to stay with him.
He said, “You know the time David was running from his dad. He asked me, ‘How far, guy? Be like say na your house I stay because my dad has sanctioned all the hotels in Nigeria’. I told him let’s go to Psquare’s house.
“You can stay in my room. When David reached my room, he said, ‘May D, this is where you stay for real?’ He said, ‘I can’t stay here’. If I had a room, it would have been cooler.”
He continued saying, “What I am saying is if I get any artiste wey don blow now I get many things wey I go set for the artiste. It may not have to be a house.
“For example, now they could give me a room in the empty section of their house. I did not care where I was staying in the boy’s quarters. It was where I was going that I had in my mind. All that happened, will I stay in boys’ quarters and sign a contract?
“It was not too much for me to have a flat. I started thinking about my life. People come to the house and ask me questions.”
