Former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, has noted that politicians who spend more during elections in Ogun usually lose out because the residents of the state don’t vote because of the money, but with their intelligence.
Ishola made the assertions while speaking with journalists at June 12, Cultural Center Abeokuta at an event organised to mark the World Radio Day organized by Freelancer and Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria (Ogun state chapter)
He said money holds no sway in Ogun’s political landscape, asserting that the state’s sophistication prevents the people from succumbing to financial inducements during elections.
The former High Commissioner said history supports his claim, with the highest spenders consistently losing elections in the state.
While expressing concerns about vote buying, Ishola emphasized that with the political consciousness and enlightenment of Ogun people, there should not be any worry about monetary influences in elections conducted in the state.
He, however, urged other states to emulate Ogun in fostering a politically aware populace.
On the need for harmony in leadership transitions, Isola said it’s a joint responsibility between leaders and the people, advocating for peace as a catalyst for sustained development.
While calling for unity, Amb Ishola urged everyone in the state to be advocates of peace, emphasizing that eight years is insufficient for comprehensive community or state development.
Regarding the significance of radio, he highlighted its accessibility, especially in rural areas, underscoring its influence as a powerful medium for disseminating messages across the country
Meanwhile, former Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Johnson Kokumo, emphasized that every region in Nigeria faces insecurity, including kidnapping, banditry, murder, piracy, cultism, and bombings.
He also urged communities to take responsibility for combating crimes.
He also called on radio presenters to use their platform in the fight against criminal activities, highlighting the pervasive nature of insecurity across the nation.
Individuals such as Senator Adeola Olamilekan were also honoured in acknowledgement of their outstanding contributions in various fields, including broadcasting and diplomacy among others.
