Afrobeats singer, Joeboy has said that Grammy winner, Wizkid’s recent comment regarding Afrobeats was taken out of context.

Wizkid recently issued a public notice that he does not want to be addressed as an Afrobeats artiste.

The ‘Essence’ crooner stated this on Friday, 15th of March while announcing that his next body of work was complete and ready to be released.

Wizkid warned fans not to expect an old version or Afrobeats sound on the album which will be titled Morayo, named after his late mother.

Joeboy, while appearing as a guest on the Big Friday show with Tacha insisted that Wizkid was misunderstood, saying that the Starboy boss wasn’t disregarding Afrobeats, but just didn’t want to be boxed in the genre.

“Wizkid’s statement is being misunderstood, he is not running away from Afrobeats. All we are saying is our identity is Afrobeats but please don’t box us because we can make other genres of music too.”
