Former senator Shehu Sani has identified eleven instances where Nigerians, despite their diversity, find common ground and unity.
Sani shared these insights on Sunday via a post on the X platform using his handle, @ShehuSani, highlighting moments that often bring Nigerians together in shared emotions, pride, and even humour.
Among these unifying moments, Sani pointed to the overwhelming national support when the Super Eagles or any national sports team wins a match.
He also noted the collective outrage that arises when a fellow Nigerian is mistreated abroad, and the widespread celebrations when someone from the diaspora excels or wins international recognition.
These, he suggested, are occasions where Nigerians come together in pride and solidarity.
Other key moments include the admiration and joy felt when Nigerian artists or actors achieve global fame, reinforcing the sense of national unity.
Sani also touched on more personal and light-hearted situations, such as birthdays and weddings, or even when a prominent figure—whether liked or disliked—passes away.
Additionally, he mentioned other moments of national unity, including the rise in commodity prices, the excitement when Nigerian footballers secure contracts with top European clubs, and the scenes of Nigerians raiding palliative warehouses.
According to Sani, these instances reflect how shared national experiences can unite people in moments of joy, frustration, or collective action.
The list, according to Sani, includes, “Eleven ‘situations’ that unite Nigerians: When the Super Eagles or any other national sports teams win their matches, when a Nigerian is molested or mistreated abroad, when a diaspora excels or wins trophies, when a Nigerian artist makes waves globally, when a Nigerian actor is celebrated globally, and during birthdays and wedding events.”
He added, “When a man they like dies, when a man they don’t like dies, when raiding a palliative warehouse when commodity prices rise, and when a Nigerian footballer secures a contract with a top European club.”
