The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, arguably the most important American icon ever conceived, was involved in a traffic accident in suburban Chicago on Monday, according to a report from the Associated Press. And while no one was injured, the images going around on social media are a great reminder of just how precious life can be when we’re confronted with our own mortality in a large novelty vehicle shaped like a hot dog.

The X account Chicago Critter posted photos and videos from the scene of the accident on Monday from Interstate 294. And they’re hard to look at for any American who takes pride in meat-tube-based delicacies.

The Chicago Sun-Times, which has an adorable photo of the Wienermobile on the back of a tow truck, reports the vehicle was involved in a crash with a Hyundai of some sort.

“The Wienermobile and a car were both going north on the tollway when the Wienermobile struck the car, lost control and rolled over,” the Sun-Times reported citing Illinois State Police.

The Oscar Mayer company wants to reassure the public that its Hotdoggers, the people who drive the Wienermobile, are doing just fine and appreciate the love they’re getting.

“We’re offering ongoing support for our Hotdoggers and we appreciate the support we’ve received from local authorities. Safety on the road is top priority for us,” Oscar Mayer told the Sun-Times.

The Wienermobile made its debut in 1936 with a much more humble look before being redesigned by industrial designer Brooks Stevens in the 1950s into the design we know today. And we salute this legendary designer for bringing us such a powerful symbol of Americana that has lasted through the ages.

“There’s nothing more aerodynamic than a wiener, I guess,” Stevens said, reflecting on his work, according to the Chicago Tribune many years later.

Hug your loved ones a little closer today. And let this be a lesson to everyone. We’re all one Hyundai away from losing the most precious things in life. Like delicious meat products sold in the most American ways possible. God bless this country and God bless our beautiful hot dogs.
