EXCLUSIVE: Mere weeks after signing on to 20th Century Studios’ comedy Street Justice, Will Ferrell has found another new project in Judgment Day, a comedy in development at Amazon MGM Studios that Nicholas Stoller will direct from his own script.
Judgment Day follows a young convict fresh out of prison who takes a reality TV courtroom hostage, blaming the megalomaniac TV judge (Ferrell) for a past ruling that the convict feels ruined his life.
The project reunites Ferrell with Stoller and Amazon MGM on the heels of You’re Cordially Invited, an anticipated wedding dramedy starring Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon, which premieres on Prime Video January 30.
Producers include Stoller for Stoller Global Solutions, as well as Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Alex Brown for Gloria Sanchez Productions.
As we were also first to report, Ferrell will likewise produce and star in Street Justice, playing a Dirty Harry type who goes about taking justice into his own hands. Also coming up for him, following roles in comedies like Barbie, Strays and Quiz Lady, is the Netflix comedy series Golf, which he co-created with Ramy Youssef and Josh Rabinowitz and stars in opposite the former.
September saw the release of Ferrell’s Will & Harper, a documentary examining his road trip reconnection with a close friend of 30 years (former SNL writer Harper Steele) after learning that she’s come out as a trans woman. An awards darling, of which Ferrell is both producer and subject, the film has been named as one of the Cinema Eye Honors Awards’ Unforgettables and also recently won the Critics’ Choice Documentary Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Prior to You’re Cordially Invited, Stoller helmed the queer romantic comedy Bros, co-written with and starring Billy Eichner, which was the first major studio film to feature an entirely openly LGBTQ+ cast. A veteran comedy director who broke out with directorial debut Forgetting Sarah Marshall, he’s recently partnered with wife Francesca Delbanco to shepherd Apple TV+’s comedy series Platonic, starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, which has been renewed for a second season. Other recent TV projects for his company Stoller Global Solutions which has renewed its overall deal with Sony Pictures Television, include Panhandle for Sony Pictures Television and Goosebumps for Disney+.
Ferrell and Stoller are both represented by UTA. Ferrell is also repped by Mosaic and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; Stoller by Ziffren Brittenham.
