Will ‘The Bikeriders’ turn Austin Butler into a major movie star?

I haven’t paid much attention to the hype around The Bikeriders, but here you go. The Bikeriders was written and directed by Jeff Nichols and it stars Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer and Michael Shannon. Great cast, honestly. Unfortunately, they got two British actors to play Americans-in-the-1960s. I didn’t realize it until now, but this film is a period piece about the rise of a motorcycle gang and, like, motorcycle-gang culture. Here’s one of the trailers.

I’ve already seen people talk about how this will be Austin Butler’s big star-making role. While he was Oscar-nominated for Elvis – and he was still talking like Elvis years after he played the man – it feels like Austin’s biggest buzz came from his turn in Dune 2. He was honestly great in that movie and I liked that he was sort of playing against type rather than leaning into his good looks. The Bikeriders is different – they’re basically trying to make him into the second coming of James Dean. He’s styled to look SO pretty in the film. And in his promotional appearances, he’s leaning into the pretty too. The pics in this post are from the London premiere and Rome photocall. He looks good.
