Cody Rhodes was initially set to headline WrestleMania 40 against Roman Reigns after winning the Royal Rumble. However, WWE appears to have replaced him with The Rock. The reasons behind WWE’s decision to have The Rock take Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania 40 spot have now been revealed.
Last week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown episode concluded with tension as The Rock confronted Roman Reigns. Cody Rhodes introduced the Hollywood megastar into the scene, seemingly relinquishing his WrestleMania 40 title shot, causing outrage among fans.
This led to fans rallying for The Rock to give Cody Rhodes his WrestleMania 40 spot back as well. However, quite a few people were shocked that The Rock ended up getting hated so much as well.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that WWE’s intentions for The Rock taking Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania 40 spot was to turn him into the next Daniel Bryan and become an even bigger babyface than ever before.

”I don’t know what they were expecting, but they were expecting Cody Rhodes turning Daniel Bryan, yes. They were expecting to make Cody Rhodes a new martyr, and make him a bigger babyface out of that. Were they expecting people to boo Dwayne? I don’t know, because I’ve asked that one and haven’t gotten a straight answer.”
Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania 40 direction has also been revealed. WWE also edited out Cody Rhodes’ sad reaction during his segment with The Rock on Friday Night SmackDown last week. Only time will tell what will become of The American Nightmare in the end.
