Barcelona have been spoilt for choice in the defensive department this season. The Catalan giants are not merely fortunate to have emerging talents such as Pau Cubarsi and Mika Faye, but they also boast seasoned stars like Inigo Martinez and Ronald Araujo in their ranks.
Despite competition in the back-line soaring, another defender from the academy has entered the fray: Mamadou Mbacke.
Mbacke is making a name for himself
Indeed, SPORT have cast light on the growing importance of the Senegalese defender, who is gaining prominence within the first-team training sessions.
After facing suspension with Barcelona Atletic Xavi began to regularly summon Mbacke to observe his talents firsthand.
Xavi has made a habit of calling up players from the B team when they are suspended or unable to participate.
But Mbacke is still showing up to Xavi’s training sessions, even though he will be back in the starting lineup with the subsidiary against Arenteiro.
In fact, the 21-year-old defender has now completed seven straight sessions with Xavi, a testament that he has made a strong impression on the coach, whose eye for talent cannot be doubted.
Does Mbacke have a future at Barcelona?
Mamadou Mbacke stands out for his attentive marking and, at the same time, for his mature positioning. His 1.90-meter height allows him to win aerial duels as well.
While awaiting the required paperwork to participate in the Primera RFEF, he was unable to participate in the first half of the season.
But since being free to play, coach Rafa Marquez has used the youngster in 19 games thus far.
Now, with Xavi providing him regular chances to train with the first team, it is safe to say he has won the trust of his coaches.
Though, it must be noted that Mbacke is on loan from Los Angeles. The Blaugranes have a €7 million purchase option, which Barcelona could activate if he concludes the season on a strong note.
In the event Barcelona sells his Senegalese partner in defense, Mika Faye, this summer, the chances for Mbacke are likely to rise.
