Xavi Hernández’s situation at FC Barcelona was similar to a television series with multiple twists and turns. First, following a poor series of results and in particular a heavy defeat against Villarreal in La Liga (5-3), the Spanish technician announced his departure at the end of the season. An announcement which surprised the Spanish press, while the Catalan media regularly explained that President Joan Laporta and several members of the board of directors of the Blaugrana club hoped to convince the ex-midfielder to change his mind.

And after a defeat against Real Madrid (2-3), then an elimination against Paris Saint-Germain, in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Xavi Hernández surprisingly agreed to stay at the end of April. After speaking with Joan Laporta, his president, he agreed to continue with his favorite club until June 2025. “This project is not finished yet. Me, my staff, and the entire club, have the strength to achieve important things and continue to carry out this project. Everyone knows my attachment to this club. This project must continue, we must continue to work hard, that’s why I changed my mind”he announced to the media.

Double turnaround at Barça

But ultimately, and as the Spanish press was informed before the end of the Spanish Championship, Xavi was indeed dismissed from his position as coach of FC Barcelona. “Xavi Hernández will no longer be coach at the end of the season. During a meeting that took place at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, president Joan Laporta informed Xavi Hernández that he will not continue as first team coach for the 2024-25 season.explained the Blaugrana club in its press release, informing in passing of the sequel to come. “In the coming days, FC Barcelona will inform about the new structure of the first team.”

According to the Catalan press, management did not at all appreciate the 44-year-old manager’s comments on the club’s poor finances and decided to part ways with him after the 38th day. Joan Laporta was furious with him and asked Deco to quickly start looking for a successor to Xavi on the bench for next season. This is already done since Hans-Dieter Flick is expected. The former Bayern Munich coach is expected to take charge of the team next season, after failing to lead the German team. He was preferred to Rafa Marquez, reserve coach.
