Barcelona head coach Xavi’s job was put in grave danger as the Catalans lost 4-1 in the final of the Spanish Super Cup 2024 against Real Madrid. The coach’s tactics were heavily, and deservedly called into question.

There were several choices Xavi made that isolated the fanbase, like using Sergi Roberto as the left-winger, or deploying an incredibly high-line with little to no press against a Madrid side that boasted of two of the quickest forwards in football in Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo.

And the consequences of these came to bite the blaugranes from the opening ten minutes as two goals from Vinicius put them comfortably in the lead before Robert Lewandowski halved the deficit with a volley.

Eventually, the Brazilian got one more and Rodrygo got his name on the score sheet as well, and the game ended heavily in favour of Madrid.

Despite this, Xavi is set to continue as manager of FC Barcelona, and the same has been confirmed by Deco.

“Xavi? The question does not make any sense. The coach continues to have everyone’s trust. It is a defeat that does not change anything in that aspect,” the Barcelona sporting director said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

Barcelona will shift their attention from this loss as they look forward to the Copa del Rey round of 16 against Unionistas de Salamanca. They will then have Real Betis waiting for them at the Benito Villamarin on the weekend.
