EXCLUSIVE: MACK Books is publishing i shall sing these songs beautifully, Yorgos Lanthimos’s book of photographs that the filmmaker shot in and around the New Orleans set of his film Kinds of Kindness. That film premiered at Cannes, where Lanthimos was nominated for the Palme d’Or and Jesse Plemons was awarded Best Actor.
Released by Searchlight Pictures, Kinds of Kindness stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Joe Alwyn, and Hunter Schafer.
MACK is increasingly moving into a space that publishes within and across cinema and film. It published Sofia Coppola’s book ARCHIVE, which sold over 100,000 copies worldwide so far.
“If Kinds of Kindness brings together three discretely connected narratives in one film, i shall sing these songs beautifully is a fourth, explored through the framework of the book form,” said MACK Books’ Michael Mack. “Unlike most books on cinema, this volume is not a piece of memorabilia predicated on likenesses of the famous cast, referencing recognisable scenes in the form of film stills. Yorgos’ photographs utilize the cast and set locations subtly, drawing upon his distinctive visual language to build an entirely new story which emerges through the particular challenges and limitations of a book sequence. MACK is a natural partner for Yorgos as a photographer because our interest is in making books which stand alone as artworks in themselves.”
Mack sequenced the book with Lanthimos, who directed Poor Things, The Lobster, The Favourite, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Dogtooth. Mack said it deliberately doesn’t adhere to the chronological structure of the film, allowing the photographs to become fragments in an entirely new story. The photographs are interspersed with new short texts written by Lanthimos, that evoke the fragmented lyricism of Sappho.
MACK separately formed a partnership with A24, and will lean further into the space with upcoming filmmaker books.
