Always great to see young Newcastle United stars doing well with their national set-ups and that is certainly the case with Leo Shahar and England.

The exciting 17 year old defender was captured from Wolves (see below) in September 2023 and has gone from strength to strength.

He is out in Cyprus currently at the under 17s European Championships.

The group stage has been completed and Leo Shahar started all three matches, hammering France 4-0 and beating Spain, with a 4-1 defeat to Portugal sandwiched in between.

All eyes now on Thursday for the young Newcastle United star, England take on Italy for a place in the semi-finals.

Newcastle United official update on Leo Shahar – 29 May 2024:

The young Lions got off to a flying start in their European Under-17 Championship Group D campaign following an impressive victory against the 2022 champions in Cyprus, with Shahar assisting Mikey Moore’s opening goal inside two minutes.

Further strikes from Baylee Dipepa, Moore and Ethan Nwaneri added gloss to the scoreline for Greg Lincoln’s side, with Shahar playing the full 90 minutes in Larnaca.

Shahar was handed another start for England’s youngsters as well as playing the full 90 minutes but the Newcastle full-back, who joined the Magpies from boyhood club Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer, ended up on the losing side.

England sealed a quarter-final clash with Italy as goals from Shim Mheuka, Moore and Nwaneri proved the difference, with Shahar withdrawn after 72 minutes.

The Mag report – 8 September 2023:

Leo Shahar is the latest young talent to arrive at Newcastle United.

The England Under 16s international right-back moving from Wolves after the player was convinced to move to Tyneside.

As is the case with many young players moving clubs, it appears the development compensation fee will be set by a tribunal, with seemingly no agreement able to be reached between Wolves and Newcastle United.

Last week we brought you news (see below) of the reported capture of the very exciting Trevan Sanusi, with Newcastle said to have fought off Liverpool and many other clubs to recruit the talented teenager from Birmingham.

Now it is 16 year old Leo Shahar coming in from their Midlands rivals Wolves, with the recruitment of young talent at St James’ Park now relentless.

Dan Ashworth spearheading a massive programme of bringing in the best possible talent for the future health of the club. Needless to say, the time and money getting put into this process, couldn’t be any different to what we experienced under Mike Ashley for a decade and a half.

Leo Shahar was very highly rated by Wolves and played regularly for the club’s Under 18s side last season, only turning 16 in March (2023).

Wolves head of player development Darren Ryan commented previously:

“Every time I watch Leo Shahar playing for England, he looks comfortable within the environment. We know how good he is technically…”
