The Zamfara State government has donated the sum of N20 million to the families of those who died in the boat accident, which occurred in the Gummi Local Government Area of the state.

The Deputy Governor, Mallam Mani Mummuni, announced the donation during a visit to the Emir of Gummi, retired Justice Lawal Hassan and the families of the victims.

The deputy governor said the gesture was to cushion the hardship encountered by the victims’ families.

Mummuni stated that Governor Lawal directed that the amount be disbursed to the families of the affected incident.

The deputy governor, who assured of the state government’s commitment to preventing the reoccurrence of the calamity, maintained that the state government would be in touch with the management of Nigeria Inland Waterways to provide lifejackets to all the water transport stations in the state.

He stressed, “Experts will also be deployed to sensitise operators as well as the users on prevention and safety measures, use of lifejacket would be made compulsory to every passenger and operators.’’

“Violators of these measures would be sanctioned accordingly, Mummun,” vowed.

In his remarks, Justice Hassan appreciated the state government’s gesture, describing it as timely.
