12 Zayn Malik is reeling over the death of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne.
As we reported, the 31-year-old singer passed away on Wednesday after jumping from the fourth story balcony at his room at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is all so devastating not only to fans but to those close to him, as well — including his bandmates. In their first statement posted to Instagram, Zayn, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson expressed their heartbreak over the death of their “brother” and how they “will miss him terribly.” The Pillowtalk artist specifically said on his own account that he’s “beyond devastated” in his first statement since the Get Low singer’s passing. An American music producer currently working with Zayn revealed to DailyMail.com on Thursday that he “has been in absolute bits” ever since he found out in the morning what happened to Liam. Heartbreaking. The insider further shared:
“Zayn was told in the early hours of this morning and has been in absolute bits. He is in shock, and his parents have been in touch with Liam’s family to offer their support and condolences. People close to Zayn don’t want him to be alone at the moment, so he is surrounded by friends.”
We’re glad to hear Zayn is surrounded by a support system right now. The producer added that it “had been a while since Zayn and Liam had spoken” due to “issues they had with one another in the past.”
They didn’t get into the problems the pair had with each other, but when Zayn left the group in 2015, he remained close to Liam. In fact, he said a year later that he was still “the closest with Liam.” However, as you know, things change sometimes when it comes to friendships. People grow apart. That sort of stuff.
And while on the Impaulsive podcast in 2022, Liam confessed that “there are many reasons why I dislike Zayn.” He also made a harsh joke about Zayn’s legal trouble with ex-girlfriend Gigi Hadid’s mom Yolanda. Yikes.
Of course, we don’t really know exactly why they haven’t spoken. It’s safe to assume the podcast comments may have factored into the reason, even if Liam later clarified everything. Despite their issues, the producers noted he and Zayn always “respected each other from a distance,” adding:
“They didn’t hate each other but they couldn’t see eye to eye on different things. But they both felt that they had been exploited in the music industry.”
Oof.
Losing someone, especially someone you were once close to, is never easy. It’s just unfathomable.
