Asked about the best goal of his career, Zinedine Zidane did not hesitate for a second before revealing one of his finest moments as a player.

Zinedine Zidane left the Real Madrid bench in June 2021, and since then, the French technician has not yet taken over the reins of a club. However, this does not prevent him from remaining at the heart of the Merengues news.

Recently, the Ballon d’Or winner and 1998 world champion gave an interview to the Madrid club’s media, in which he revealed what he considers to be the best goal of his career. The former number 5 of the Blancos pointed to his legendary volley against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 Champions League final. This decisive goal gave victory to Vicente Del Bosque’s team and allowed the Casa Blanca to win its 9th title in Europe’s premier competition.

Real Madrid and Zidane on top of Europe

“My most beautiful goal, the most important, I think it’s the one against Leverkusen”said Zidane, who lifted the prestigious cup with the big ears for the first time on May 15, 2002 at Hampden Park in Glasgow. The Marseillais added: “It was the trophy I was missing and we needed that goal to win it.”

As a reminder, the Santiago Bernabéu residents began their 2001-2002 European campaign by finishing first in their group, ahead of AS Roma, Lokomotiv Moscow and Anderlecht. Zidane and his teammates repeated this performance by finishing first again in the second group stage, ahead of Panathinaikos, Sparta Prague and FC Porto. In the final phase, Madrid eliminated Bayern Munich (2-1, 0-2) in the quarter-finals and FC Barcelona (0-2, 1-1) in the semi-finals, before triumphing against Werkself (2-1).
