Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has proposed that Nigeria consider adopting the Chinese model of leadership selection, which emphasizes a structured, merit-based system over traditional elections.

The governor made this suggestion at the 24th National Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Agricultural Engineers held at the Nigerian Society of Engineers headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement released on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Ahmed Bundi.

Zulum, who argued that Nigeria stands to gain from the Chinese model, was quoted as saying, “I am always referring to the election system in China.

“In China, they do selection versus election. They first identify credible leaders with proven integrity based on their past records. They evaluate the performance of those who have held public office, then select the best, and afterward, they subject the chosen candidates to an election.”

He further stressed the need for both good leadership and responsible followership in Nigeria, emphasizing that effective governance is a partnership.

“Our problem here in Nigeria is not just about leadership but also followership. We must focus on both components rather than one. As much as we need good leaders, we also need citizens who can distinguish between right and wrong,” Zulum stated.

The governor also underscored the transformative role of technology in addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges.

Speaking on the role of innovation, Zulum noted, “This conference provides a unique opportunity to share knowledge, foster collaboration, and explore how emerging technologies can revolutionize agriculture.”

He added that technology, including artificial intelligence and biotechnology, could significantly enhance Nigeria’s agricultural practices, helping build resilient and sustainable food systems to support a growing population.
