Refresh for latest: American Cinema Editors is handing out the 74th Eddie Awards tonight, and Deadline is posting the winners as they are announced. Nina West is hosting the ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Check out the list below.
Early winners include Beef, The Bear and How I Met Your Father for Best Editing for Limited Series, Best Editing for multi-cam and single cam comedies, respectively, Still: The Michael J. Fox Movie for Best Edited Documentary (Theatrical), Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour for Best Edited Variety Talk/Sketch Show or Special and Reality for Best Edited Feature (Non-Theatrical). Blue Eye Samurai has taken the honor for Best Edited Animated Series and Couples Therapy for Best Edited Non-Scripted Series.
Stephen Lovejoy was the first award recipient of the night with the previously announced ACE Heritage Award. Kate Amend, introduced by Lisa Gay Hamilton, received the first awarded lifetime career achievement honor of the evening. George Lucas introduced Walter Murch for the second awarded lifetime career achievement honor, calling Murch “a renaissance man, the most amazing intellectual, curious person I’ve ever met.”
Vying for the marquee Best Edited Film prize for theatrical dramas are Anatomy of a Fall, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer and Past Lives. The comedy combatants are Air, American Fiction, Barbie, The Holdovers and Poor Things.
Since the turn of the 21st century, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has gone on to score the Academy Award for Best Editing 13 of 23 times — but none of the past four years. In a twist, it was the Eddies’ 2023 comedy winner, Everything Everywhere All at Once, that ended up scooping the Oscar. Top Gun: Maverick took ACE’s top drama prize last year.
The 2024 Best Editing Oscar nominees are Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer and Poor Things.
A quartet of honorees will receive career awards from the American Cinema Editors. The ever-quirky writer-director John Waters is set for the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, recognizing a filmmaker who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film. Three-time Oscar winner Walter Murch and Emmy nominee Kate Amend are the 2024 Career Achievement recipients, and the society’s Heritage Award will be presented to veteran TV editor Stephen Lovejoy.
